Best 3 Ways to Wash Your Clothes
Cleaning your clothing is so simple! Throw your clothes in the washer, add some detergent and start it up. Easy right? Wrong. The manufacturers of your clothing take the time to print instructions on those labels so many of us ignore or tear off for a reason. If you take a minute before tearing those labels, you’ll find the details on how to wash the specific material! Here at City Dry Cleaning, we perform this washing technique in house to be sure that your items are washed properly.
This is the most common technique of cleaning your clothing – using the washing machine. Most washing machines have a variety of settings, hot water, cold, warm, cold-then warm, etc. Something to keep in mind while machine washing is that hot water normally leads to shrinkage and is harder on fabrics than cold water. However, there are serious stains that can only be eliminated by a hot wash cycle. Following a machine wash, you then get to choose whether you want to dry the clothing by machine or allow them to hang dry. Allowing your clothes to dry naturally is better on the fabrics, but this process may take hours compared to the minutes in the machine dryer. If you have the hours to sift through your clothes, go right ahead and do so! If not, bring these garments in to us at City Dry Cleaning and let us show you how we take care of your garments.
The hand washing technique is normally for delicates or items that are likely to be damaged by the force and repetition of a washing machine. In order to hand wash a garment, find a clean washbasin, tub, or sink then fill it with cold water and add a few drops of soap. Grab your item and begin to knead gently for about two minutes. Some recommend using hair conditioner for rinsing purposes with silks. Rinse until the soap is completely gone then lay the item flat to dry. We want to be sure you understand that hand wash is NOT the same as dry clean. So, if hand washing doesn’t sound fun to you, drop your garments off at City and let us do the work for you.
Dry Clean Only
Dry cleaning is one of the most efficient and gentle ways to clean your clothing– and our personal favorite! The label on your clothing serves as a “best practices,” guide. If the label says, “Dry clean only,” know that this is the best way to handle the item. Take note that items made of silk, taffeta, wool, velvet or other exotic fabrics should be ONLY dry-cleaned.
According to the Dry Cleaning and Laundry Institute, “Dry cleaning uses fluids to remove soils and stains from fabrics. Among the advantages of dry cleaning is its ability to dissolve grease and oils in a way that water cannot. Natural fibers such as wools and silks dry clean beautifully, but can shrink, distort, and lose color when washed in water. Synthetic fibers like polyester also respond well to dry cleaning, whereas they can retain oily stains after washing. Dry cleaning helps to return garments to “like-new” condition using precautions to prevent shrinkage, loss of color, and change of texture or finish.”
Some sources suggest that you can wash items that are “dry clean only.”, but we advise you to do so at your own risk. The labels on your clothing include washing directions for the specific fabric for a reason. Therefore, any time you vary from the washing method recommendation, you increase the risk of damaging your clothing.
